Application Focus: What is AOPD? Is it contagious??
|

Just the opposite (thankfully!)...AOPD stands for Active Optoelectronic Protective Device and is important to the safe use of
light as protection. How? Here microprocessor technology is used to evaluate the beams individually. On multi-beam safety devices, not all light beams are generally activated at the same time, but switched ON and OFF one after the other in high speed succession.
This improves resistance to interference from other sources of light and increases the reliability significantly. For state-of-the-art AOPDs, sender and receiver automatically synchronize through an optical connection. Our Y-series (YBB and YCA) also feature:
-
Protective Heights from 6" to 72"
-
Operating Distances up to 164 feet
-
Watertight IP65 and IP67 sealed
-
Simple M12 quick disconnect, double PNP outputs
-
Pre-engineered Kits with emitter, receiver, control, cables, mounting
Choose from Type 2 or Type 4 rated, detection of intrusions is guaranteed as the potentially harmful machine cycle is brought to a safe stop.

Mechanical damage to inductive proximity switches: the hammer
demonstration
|
Sensor systems used in production units
are, by their very nature, exposed to all kinds
of situations where they can easily be
damaged. This can result in sensor failures,
which in turn lead to machine downtimes
and maintenance overheads, the costs of
which are continually escalating, due to the
increasing complexity of installations and
the consequent rise in the number of sensors
used. For this reason, increasing sensor
operating reliability is a matter of high priority.
The reliability of the devices themselves
has, in fact, reached a level today that leaves
little to be desired – provided that their
specification limits are not exceeded. In
practice however, even when taking the
utmost care, this cannot always be
permanently guaranteed. For this reason,
there is a growing interest for sensors having
as wide a “misuse tolerance” as possible.
This is particularly valid for inductive devices,
which from the quantity point of view,
generally dominate the European and USA
markets.

NEW! Contrinex MiniMini—SMALLEST
INDUCTIVE SENSOR IN THE WORLD
|
Maximum sensor performance in
minimum space
Measuring
just 12 mm in length and 3 mm in
diameter, the MiniMini is the
smallest inductive sensor in the
world today. This subminiature
construction, which even includes
IO-Link, has been made possible by
using the latest mixed-signal ASIC
technology. This technology reduces
component count by combining analog
signal processing with digital
computing power on a single chip.
Another advantage is that it
eliminates the need to use separate
analog components. The MiniMini
features high switching frequency of
8 kHz and excellent temperature
stability.
Sensor calibration takes place after
the production process by means of
the integrated ASIC. Due to the
extraordinary accuracy, there are
only slight measurable production
variations in operating distance or
other key values across any single
series.
HIGH-PRESSURE RESISTANT VERSION
Alongside the standard version with
a plastic cap, Contrinex also offers
a pressure-resistant version with a
ceramic sensing face. With a plastic
cap the switching distance is 1 mm;
with a ceramic cover it is 0.8 mm.
KEY FEATURES
• Sub-miniature construction 3 x 12
mm
• Reduced component count
• Increased reliability
• Excellent temperature stability in
range -25°C to +70°C (-13°F to
+158°F)
• Pressure-resistant version up to
200 bar (2902 psi), IP 68 / IP 69K
protection
APPLICATIONS
The MiniMini's mixed-signal ASIC
technology makes it particularly
suitable for all applications where
signals are recorded in analog form,
but must be digitized for
transmission. Typical application
areas are mainly found wherever very
limited available space demands ever
more compact
construction with increasing
integration density and sensor
performance.

New! Contrinex introduces
Safetinex Safety Light Curtains!
-
|
The Safetinex
product line produced by Contrinex
offers high-quality safeguarding
solutions for both personnel and
machinery. The range of safety light
curtains comprises highly sensitive
type-4 devices for finger and hand
protection, with various lengths and
connection options.
Operating principle
The Safetinex YBB light curtains
operate with infrared beams. When
the light curtain detects a finger
or hand entering the defined
hazardous area, the protective
equipment immediately stops the
machine, or renders it harmless.
When operating in manual restart
mode, the reset button enabling the
operator to restart the machine must
be located outside the hazardous
area. From there, the operator must
have a full view of the hazardous
area to make sure that nobody is in
danger before restarting the
machine.
Safetinex
light curtains are designed to
ensure protection of operators
working in hazardous areas. A high
reliability is achieved by
implementing a fail-safe system:
Type 4 safety light curtains are
permanently self-controlled, where
an internal failure immediately
deactivates the output signals, as
would an intrusion into the
protective field
|
 |
 |
APPLICATION
AREAS
The Safetinex YBB range is best
suited where finger and hand
protection is required close to the
hazardous area (point of operation).
Depending on the application, a
resolution of either 14 mm (finger
protection) or 30 mm (hand
protection) will be advisable.
Thanks to their category/type 4
safety level, these light curtains
can be used on equipment requiring
high protection reliability, such
as:
• machine tools
• robots
• hydraulic presses
• automated stock management
• weaving looms, etc |

Contrinex sets new benchmark for
background suppression sensors!
|
Diffuse
background suppression (BGS)
photoelectric sensors are used in
applications where accurate
differentiation between the target
and potentially interfering
backgrounds is essential.
As with all such set-ups, when using
this technique, it is vital that
only the target is sensed,
regardless of the:
• color
• surface
• shape of the background
• target.
Setting new standards in this field
is the Contrinex Series 3131 range.
Tough and compact, these all-new
sensors are built in a package
measuring only 30mm x 30mm x 15mm
and have a long sensing distance of
200mm. The precision background
suppression can be adjusted in small
increments down to 15mm and, because
the sensors have a tiny blind zone,
targets can be sensed down to 1mm
from the lens. Most importantly, the
sensors are immune to the color,
shape and surface texture of the
background beyond the set target
detection point thus ensuring
stable, long-term reliability.
The Series 3131 sensors have a red
spotlight that helps alignment to
the target, an amber LED that
indicates detection and a green LED
that confirms the optimum set-up. A
12-turn potentiometer adjustment
allows extremely accurate setting of
the background cut-off position and
a narrow, focused beam prevents the
detection of any adjacent objects or
unwanted features that are close to
the target.
Key Features:
• A high immunity to stray light
sources and voltage overload
• Short circuit and induction spike
protection
• Operating frequency is 500Hz
• Switched current rating is 200mA
• Wide operating supply voltage from
10 to 36 VDC
• Stable sensing range from 25°C to
+55°C
• Sealed to IP67.

New! Flat Fiber Optic Array
sensor from Contrinex detects
objects in any position
-
across a broad area of light
transmission!
|
Contrinex has
developed a unique multiple beam,
diffuse, flat fiber optic array
sensor to solve the problem of
capturing, counting and controlling
small components produced by modern,
high-performance manufacturing
machinery.
High exit speeds of parts from
production machinery can make
product position vary greatly and
component count extremely difficult.
The new Contrinex LFP-1011-020 flat
fiber optic array sensor,
specifically designed for this type
of application, has a beam spread of
28mm that will detect objects in any
position across the broad area of
light transmission.
|
 |
|
These
new sensors can be connected
to any Contrinex fiber-optic
amplifier creating a very
long sensing range of up to
150mm. When used with a 5KHz
amplifier, the smallest
component passing at high
speed can be detected. In
addition, by using a
blue-light emitting
amplifier connected to the
fiber instead of the more
common red light option,
even small black rubber
components can be readily
detected.
Compared to alternative
technologies such as ring or
frame sensors, this new
fiber concept is extremely
simple to apply and at a
fraction of the cost.
Each multi-beam head is
supplied with 2m of polymer
fibers that can be cut to
length to enable them to be
neatly retained and
protected along the optimum
path to the amplifier. The
wide-vision fiber head is
molded from tough PBTP
Crastin and is sealed to
IP67 for use in aggressive
environments.

New
Contrinex M12 Laser Sensor for use
in Hostile Environments! |
A new M12
laser sensor with a body length of
only 50mm and an operating range of
50m has been developed by Contrinex
for use in hostile environments that
prohibit the use of photoelectric
and fiber optic sensors and where
even inductive devices are
susceptible to failure.
|
 |
|
Protected to IP67, immune to
interference from other
light sources, resistant to
high shock levels and
protected against the
effects of electro-magnetic
radiation, these M12,
stainless steel, high
performance sensors are
ideal for processes such as
welding where fumes, soot
and sparks create an
extremely hostile
environment and yet it is
necessary to verify certain
key components are present
and correctly assembled.
With a sensing beam of less
than 1mm diameter, they can
be used to detect very small
objects with great accuracy
at a distance where the
process emissions do not
affect the device.
Using a pulsed laser
(660nM), it is a simple
process to line up and set
the fine through-beam to
detect the target. Detection
is confirmed by a yellow
LED, while a green LED
confirms there is sufficient
light for reliable
operation. This diagnostic
system also continuously
monitors for dirt build-up
or any misalignment that may
occur during operation.
These sensors have an
operating supply voltage
from 10 to 30 VDC, a 5kHz
switched output frequency
and a current rating of
200mA. In addition, the
sensing range is stable from
-25°C to +55°C and they are
short-circuit and inverse
polarity proof and overload
protected.
